Penn State University Altoona Campus High Voltage Upgrade
Westmoreland Electric performed a complete rewire of the Altoona campus’s medium voltage distribution system, including new ductbank, new MV cable and terminations, new switchgear, sectionalizing cabinets and new transformers, along with some new secondary feeders. The project presented a specific challenge in that we were installing much of the underground ductbank in the same vicinity as the existing underground primary cable, much of which was not installed in conduit, but just direct buried. The new excavation work needed to be performed carefully in order to avoid tearing up existing 5KV energized cables. The contract also included a considerable amount of Value Engineering before a contract could be issued and then the 13 month project was essentially completed during the campus summer break.
This project was nominated for and won an Eagle Award for Excellence in Construction from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Western Pennsylvania.
